Mamaku residents are being warned to urgently conserve water after the main bore that supplies the township with water failed.
Rotorua Lakes Council water operations manager Eric Cawte said the main bore pump failed on Tuesday night and while they were using a backup bore and bringing water in by tanker it could only supply a limited flow.
He said the system would not be able to keep up with the current demand due to the hot, dry weather until the main pump was fixed, which was expected to take a number of days.
Mr Cawte said if residents did not urgently significantly reduce water supply, a loss of supply was likely to occur.
Residents connected to the Mamaku water supply were being asked not to use garden sprinklers or irrigation systems, not to fill swimming or spa pools and to avoid using hoses.
