Rotorua's bike enthusiasts donned their high vis, buckled up their helmets and rode to multiple pit stops dotted across the city for Go by Bike Day.

The Valentine's Day themed event was successfully held for the sixth year in Rotorua and other Bay of Plenty centres, between 7am and 9am today.

Cyclists were encouraged to "share the love with fellow lovers of the bike," on Sport Bay of Plenty's social media page.

Rotorua stops have seen about 40 visitors each in past years, but this time the busiest of the four stops was on the corner of Moray Place and Basley Rd, with about 33 visitors.

Resident Wynel George put her brakes on at the pit stop on her way to the Rotorua Lakes High School assembly.

"I swear by it: getting fumes off the road for pleasure, leisure and practicality."

The stops had sponsored prizes up for grabs, with everything from bike bells to clothing.

Central Bay of Plenty recreation adviser Lauren Atkinson said she wasn't sure the morning would go ahead after the wet start to the week, but ended up with 110 riders.

The event's lunchtime picnic in Government Gardens was postponed until later in the month because of the dampness.

Last weekend, wet weather forced the postponement of the "Frocks on Bikes Summer Ramble" until March 3.
