Hundreds of locals met at Kuirau Park last night for the Rotorua Geyserland Lions Club's annual Carols by Candlelight event.

The free family event started at 7pm but concertgoers started arriving around 6pm to ensure they nabbed a good spot for the night.

Entertainment included the Rotorua Symphonic Band, Go Bananas and Evelyn Falconer before candles were lit at around 8.50pm, signalling the finale.

Carols by Candlelight first-timer Anna May said the event looked like a "good Christmasy thing to do".

"We saw it advertised and thought it would be a good idea to go along. We'll definitely be back again next year."

Teawaroa Raerino said she saw the sign and decided to bring the family along.

"Its a clean, safe, and fun family event and it is a good chance to get into the Christmas spirit.

"This is the first time we've been so it's something a bit different and exciting for us."
Tutz Raerino, 10, said he was excited.

"Christmas is the best time of year and music is one way you can celebrate so that's why I wanted to come."
