A Gypsy Extravaganza rolled into Rotorua on the weekend with organisers saying they had a great time and would be heading back to the city soon.

Jugglers, stilt walkers, singers and entertainers performed for the crowds while shows and activities included a giant kaleidoscope, pedal-powered merry-go-round, face painting, hair braiding, hoola hoop show, bouncy castles and old-school sack races and a tug-o-war.

Gypsy Extravaganza production manager and creator Mels Berg said theirs was the largest travelling gypsy fair in the country.

"We've never been here at this time of year before, but we had a really good time with lots of locals and tourists.

"We make sure there's lots of stuff for the kids to do like giving them a musical instrument and letting them perform," she said.

Gypsy traveller Hipsy Scott said she had a great weekend painting happy faces and selling a range of items to visitors.

"We really enjoyed Rotorua. We had lots of people here all day enjoying all of the free entertainment."

A Gypsy Extravaganza heads to Papamoa next weekend.
