Coal imports a shock
I was shocked to read in
the Daily Post (News, February 15) that New Zealand imported 1.1 million tonnes of coal last year, higher than for 2017 and 2018 combined.
These figures are unacceptable.
If we can't provide enough power from renewable resources now when the use of electric vehicles is so low, how can it be remotely possible in the next 10 to 15 years, after which the government plans to ban imports of diesel and petrol cars?
Where is the investment in hydropower? Where is the investment in solar and wind farms?
New Zealand is so far behind Europe and the UK in that field, yet comes out with totally unachievable aspirations.
People would respond better to realistic targets, not pipe dreams made to impress international climate change activists.

Cycleways need rethink
It is great to see the city having second thoughts on these expensive cycleways.
Those who want them want others who don't use them to subsidise their construction and ACC costs when they fall off or get hit by cars because there are a lot of cyclists who don't obey the road rules with no accountability.
With rates rising out of control, the council's role is for infrastructure and if extras are wanted by some, then pay.
Put number plates on bikes and register them, then riders become identifiable for traffic infringements etc.
