How sad it is that we feel the need to give our water rights away to overseas interests.

Water in our country is an asset that we have gradually polluted and filled with unsavoury matter. What sort of future are we creating for our great grand-children in New Zealand?

Are we seeking to create a future in which the only pure water they can drink is water that we have given away for free and they have to purchase from overseas interests?

Unfortunately short term profit over long term sense seems to be dictating the decisions made by our leaders, in my view.

One of the excuses given by our leaders is that we waste millions of litres of water in farming and industry anyway so why not lose more water by giving it away for some overseas company to make a profit on?

What a shocking answer! Immediate steps should be put in place to stop the waste of water by businesses and industry and heavy fines imposed on any wastage of our precious resource.

Water is not a never ending product - water is essential for life and the reckless attitude shown by our leaders will one day result in great devastation to our life-giving streams and great consternation to future generations.

Having read John Mayhew's words of praise for the boys who were so thoughtful in donating to his wife's funeral charity (Letters March 15) I would like to endorse his words of praise.

I also felt a sense of pride when I saw the group of Rotorua Boys' High school pupils at Mrs Maynard's funeral. They were well dressed, behaved in a respectful manner and were a pride to their school.

From 1979 to 1987 my late husband was the Senior Master at Rotorua Boys' High School. When I attended Mrs Mayhew's funeral I knew how he would have felt seeing these boys acting with such decorum and dignity.

Rotorua Boys' High School continues to excel not only on the sports field but in all aspects of life.

Keep up the great standards. Well done.
