Flooding in Edgecumbe. Photograph by George Novak

The media has given a lot of cover to the Edgecumbe floods. Most of it has rightly been about the deep distress of the people whose houses were flooded. Some stories have been about household pets. But there has been very little coverage of the disastrous situation for farms. The thousands of dairy cows evacuated have hardly had a mention. Nor have the farm families affected. Hardly a word has been said about the loss of income to them and the economy. If the rescue of one chook can get prime-time coverage, so much more should the rural community.

I see residents of Masterton are up in arms about the $320,000 sculpture to hover over a roundabout. They've got nothing to worry about - our roundabout sculpture is a mere $500,000!
