I am truly alarmed at the figure given for percentage of voters at local elections - 42 per cent! This is truly alarming.
Having lived and worked in the UK where the average number of voters - even at National elections - hovers around 37 per cent I know the devastation caused by allowing the wrong people to get elected. London is now in a state of turmoil simply because Londoners are notoriously uncaring at elections.
As a member of several groups in Rotorua I often hear people complaining about the things done by politicians -my first question is: "Did you vote?" Invariably the answer is "no".
If you can't be bothered to vote then you have absolutely no right to belly ache about anything politicians do to your city or country. Remember that.

One of the strangest bits of news I've heard since returning from holiday is the fanciful notion of Rotorua being off the national grid by 2050 by converting to geothermal. Maybe this dreamer wasn't in town 30 years ago when many geothermal bores were shut off because they were adversely affecting the geothermal areas in the district. Rotorua is a tourist destination and one of the attractions is thermal activity. You can't have your cake and eat it. Secondly, we all have a right to choose our energy supplier. But then dreams, irrespective of how realistic they are, are free.
