Sixties legends The Searchers are coming to Rotorua, giving locals a chance to go back to a time to when Merseybeat music reigned supreme.
The popular band, who made a splash in the 1960s music scene with hits such as Sweets for my Sweet, Needles and Pins, and Sugar and Spice, will perform at the Rotorua Civic Theatre on August 1. Along with The Beatles, The Searchers was one of the most influential Merseybeat groups, which was a genre that developed in the United Kingdom and involved bands from Liverpool and areas beside the River Mersey. The band formed in 1959 and released their first album Meet The Searchers in 1963. They have recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of their formation.
Promoter Layton Lillas said the concert was a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for locals. "They're a legendary band and have had some massive hits over the years," he said.
Last year The Searchers returned to New Zealand for the first time in more than a decade, though they did not play in Rotorua, he said.
