Rotorua children are being offered the chance to take part in their very own Rotorua Marathon.
On Friday Rotorua primary school children are taking part in a marathon project organised by Event Promotions, Events and Venues and Sport Bay of Plenty with the aim of getting more Rotorua primary school children involved in this iconic event.
Primary School Events co-ordinator Ariki Tibble said it was hoped the children would want to take part in the future.
"It's a really exciting opportunity for local kids to experience the buzz generated by the Marathon and it will give them the chance to truly catch the running bug," he said.
Those taking part have been required to track 40km worth of running in the build up to the event so that they can complete the final 2.1km of their marathon on the actual Rotorua Marathon course.
"This gives them an idea of just how far a full marathon is, and a true sense of accomplishment when they complete it," he said.
Event Promotions will be providing official finisher's medals.
"I personally think that the Rotorua Mini Marathon is a great idea, which requires real commitment from the kids, and helps them to cultivate a love of running as an ends in itself," he said.
