It has been described as a saturated blowout and takes more than two hours to walk off but the controversial Double Down burger hit the spot with one burger fan.
Rotorua production engineer Andy George was one of the first in line at the Amohau St KFC yesterday and said it was worth it.
"Man it's good," he said after taking his first bite.
Mr George and his colleagues were among a steady stream of customers eager to try the limited edition burger. It's only available in New Zealand for five weeks. With two of everything, the Double Down boasts two chicken fillets, two slices of bacon and two slices of cheese - one standard, one cracked pepper, all topped off with sauce.
"They've got the flavours right, I loved every bit of it," Mr George said after devouring it.
"The pepper cheese and sauce made it. It was so much nicer than the run-of-the-mill burger with a bread bun. I just have to work it off now." The Double Down is the first massively produced bunless burger. It smashed records in the US when it debuted with more than 10 million sold in a month. KFC general manager Brent Kitto said Kiwis called for KFC to bring the Double Down to New Zealand since it launched in the US and Canada. "Double Down breaks the mould," he said. "We know the Double Down is not for everyone.
"It's an occasional meal that Kiwis have a hunger for, and is only available for a limited time. "The Double Down is actually lower in calories and fat than a number of other burgers already on the market."
However, the Heart Foundation said for the majority of New Zealanders and their children the product contained almost a whole day's intake of saturated fat.
"We already have a huge range of foods laden with calories and saturated fat to choose from - what we need more of is tasty appealing, healthier options, and we would like [KFC to] take this challenge seriously," a spokeswoman said.
"The best thing about the Double Down burger is that it's only available for a limited time and KFC has acknowledged that it is an 'occasional food'."
Because of the double chicken, cheese and bacon it had intentionally created a saturated fat blow-out, she said.
