John Paul College Year 12 French students Kesia Kurian and Bethany Cheesman have won a national literacy prize by translating a French poem into English.
The students chose a poem by Victor Hugo in rhyming couplets and translated it into English, also using rhyming couplets. The competition was run by the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation and Wai-te-ata Press at Victoria University with the theme of "Peace".
The competition was open to all students and its aim was to celebrate literature, languages and cultures in secondary schools. It was also designed to inspire and reward excellence in translation by secondary-level students. This is a huge achievement for Kesia and Bethany who won $250 each and $500 for the school. They will attend an awards ceremony in Wellington on December 7.
