Some Rotorua people were allowed to wear jandals to work yesterday - all for a good cause.
The employees at Rotorua State Insurance branch were celebrating Jandal Day to raise money for Surf Life Saving New Zealand, which is celebrating 100 years of saving lives.
Thousands of volunteers around the country were wearing jandals and collecting for the cause.
Surf Life Saving corporate affairs officer Monique Caddy said the organisation was not Government-funded so money was needed to deliver its essential services.
The Radio Network and Countdown in Rotorua were also celebrating Jandal Day, but for safety reasons Countdown employees wore Hawaiian shirts instead of jandals.
Four of the employees at the Rotorua State Insurance branch were in jandals and beachwear while collecting money to support Surf Life Saving New Zealand.
State personal insurance consultant Dorne Cross liked wearing jandals to work.
"It's free and easy, nice. A good wind-down for the weekend."
But she said it was a shame more people didn't know it was on, as it was a great cause.
Her colleague Kaaren Clifton said the day was especially important as most New Zealanders went to the beach where lifesavers were essential.
This is the first year State Insurance has supported Surf Life Saving on Jandal Day and the company is also a sponsor of water safety initiative Swim NZ.
Last Jandal Day $350,000 was raised for Surf Life Saving. Organisers hoped to reach $450,000 this year.
