"The girls have planned a social to celebrate, which will be held on Saturday night at the race course."
Taylor said the seven-a-side tournament functioned as an end-of-season event for most teams and was very social.
She said it was so popular, most years they had to turn people away because it was full.
Taylor said it was first run by an Auckland group, back in the 1960s, and she had taken over the organising duties about 35 years ago.
"It started as a representative women's tournament way back and it was run by Auckland, it was called the Rothmans Tournament," she said.
"When I took it over, which was about 35 years ago, we still ran it as the Rothmans Tournament, but we changed it to the United Women's Hockey Indoor Tournament soon after as we basically did it all on our own [as a club]."
She said about 20 years ago the organisers introduced a men's and mixed section to the tournament, after some of the husbands and partners complained there was nothing for them.
"The mixed section is our most popular now," she said.
Taylor said of the 82 teams competing this weekend about 20 teams were from Rotorua.
Unfortunately, she said they only had enough room for one court at the Sportsdrome, which meant games would only last 10 minutes.
She explained every team was guaranteed three games during the weekend, but some groups entered more than one team to make the most of the weekend.
She estimated more than 500 people would be competing in the tournament this weekend.
