High winds have closed the Rotorua landfill today.

According to the Rotorua Lakes Council Facebook page the landfill and the in-town recycling centre were closed due to high winds creating a health and safety risk.

However, a post at 2.17pm said the in-town recycling centre had re-opened.

The landfill remained closed.

Rotorua Lakes Council apologised for any inconvenience.

MetService meteorologist Brian Mercer said Rotorua averaged wind gusts of between 60-65km/h today with the highest gust recorded at 78km/h at the Rotorua Airport.
