A heavy rain watch is in place for the Eastern Bay of Plenty as a slow-moving front looks set to stall over the region tomorrow.
MetService said a trough was forecast to become stationary over the northeast of the North Island on Friday, and remain slow-moving there through the weekend, before moving away
to the northeast during Monday and Tuesday.
Periods of heavy rain was expected east of Opape in the Bay of Plenty between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning.
Rainfall could approach warning amounts from Saturday through to Monday.
HEAVY RAIN IN THE EAST THIS WEEKEND
A slow moving low gradually tracks across the country during the next few days, setting up a band of rain that sits over eastern parts of the North Island and upper South Island. This, combined with winds turning around to the east, means a wet weekend for areas from the Bay of Plenty down to coastal Marlborough. The heaviest falls are expected to be in the eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, and a Heavy Rain Watch is already in effect for those areas - and likely to be upgraded to a Warning http://bit.ly/SWWatch.
Further south the rain will set into Hawkes Bay Friday afternoon, and in Canterbury on Saturday night.
