Heavy rain is expected in Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty tonight and tomorrow morning.
MetService said a trough, preceded by a moist north to northwest flow, will bring periods of rain to much of the North Island with the heaviest rain expected in the Bay of Plenty where 140mm could fall from this evening through to midday Sunday.
Rotorua's lakes are already at unprecedented levels after ex-cyclones Debbie and Cook hit the region earlier this month and the Okere gates on Lake Rotoiti remain fully open.
