"Rangatira ma, nga waka, nga karangataha maha, mai nga topito e wha huri noa te motu, tena koutou katoa.

First, may I on behalf of Te Arawa, thank and congratulate the Rotorua Daily Post Principals and Management, for dedicating a special section devoted to Maori interests and concerns, on a monthly basis.

Such an initiative can only lead to positive promotion and strengthening of social, cultural, economic and civic relationships between Maori, Pakeha and people of all other nationalities, who now live in Rotorua because it is their home too.

I suspect a fair number of people were back into the swing of things, last week, despite the Christmas and New Year interlude. From now on, one can presume that meetings and regular chores, are once again, well ensconced as part of the daily routine.

I for one, have been closely following the work that John Green and his special committee are forging ahead with, to enable our city to grow. Mayor Chadwick and her Councillors adopted a resolution that was both historic and politically forward thinking.

The Council, together with Te Arawa, can do wonders for the city, if given the pportunity by the citizens of the Rotorua Lakes District. The Council and Te Arawa have embarked on a programme to have Maori Television relocate to Rotorua in the near future. All the Iwi throughout the country will be consulted. To date, all the tribes (98%) that have been formally approached, have pledged their undivided support.

Te Arawa, Interpine and SCION, have joined forces to develop a forestry programme with the support of government funding, to grow trees on uneconomic waste lands. It is predicted that the processing of the logs back here in New Zealand, rather than overseas, will create thousands of jobs. The overall income derived from this initiative, will impact significantly on the Gross National Product.
