A young girl has suffered a head injury after her hair caught in a go-kart, in what was described as an "unusual incident".

The 8-year-old girl was airlifted to hospital following the incident in Tokoroa yesterday afternoon.

She suffered a head injury, a Westpac Waikato Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said.

"This was an unusual incident, a result of the patient having her hair caught in the drive mechanism of the cart while being towed by another cart."

Tokoroa St John Ambulance and the Fire Service, as well as police attended the scene.

The girl was flown to Waikato Hospital's emergency department.

The incident happened around 5.15pm at a private address in Tokoroa, Tash Lawrence, from the northern ambulance communications centre, said.

The girl was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Nobody else was injured in the incident, Ms Lawrence said.
