Since starting Frugal Kiwi Mum, I am amazed at what other people have taught me.
In addition to my own ideas, here are some really cheap and easy ways in which my 'Frugalers' have inspired me into increasing nutrients in my diet without impacting the purse strings too much.
Use lentils and grated vegetables to bulk up mince. Cheap and easy and children love the different colors.
Buy cheaper mince but boil it before mixing with other ingredients to remove saturated fats.
Add grated or minced vegetables to recipes. For example, Frugal Kiwi Mum's Scotch egg recipe has added grated onion, carrot and kidney beans. My children wouldn't eat these things otherwise.
Dried fruit is handy to snack on and keeps well in the cupboard plus it's a fraction of the price of fresh fruit.
Use the freezer to your advantage! Freeze fruit and vegetables which are in season so that you have them on hand for when they are out of season and consequently more expensive! Capsicums, grapes and tomatoes are all relatively cheap at the moment.
Cereals such as Weet-bix Bites or Bran flakes make great lunchbox snacks and are sustaining and full of fiber. Don't worry about the milk!
