The movies was Frozen and while the night was a bit on the chilly side there were lots of warm hearts for the free outdoor movie last night.

The Rotorua Daily Post Winter Feature Film screening of Disney's Frozen is part of The Hits Fire and Ice festival and last night more than 1000 people flocked to the Village Green for the free screening.

Sheryl Sievers took her granddaughters, Alexis Tarrant, 3, and Kylee Thompson, 5, along as a bit of an adventure.

"They've never seen it before and this was a surprise for them," Ms Sievers said.

I told them to pack a few things and that we were going on an adventure. They didn't know what they were doing when we got here. Then they saw Frozen and they were quite excited.

"They thought we were going camping, but this is more fun. I think it's awesome and a good start to the holidays."

Before the film started there was Frozen Idol, where fans of the film could sing along to the hit song Let It Go. There were also opportunities to win passes to the Harcourts Ice Rink, which is also on the Village Green.

Rotorua Daily Post editor Kim Gillespie said it was great to see so many families enjoying themselves.

"This is a great way for families to start the school holidays," he said.

"Frozen is an apt movie for this time of year but everyone was wrapped up warm. We're glad so many people came out to enjoy it."

The Fire and Ice festival runs until July 27.
