Four prisoners were transferred after a mattress fire in the Whakatāne Police Station.

Police were made aware of a mattress fire in a holding cell on Boon St at 6.15pm yesterday and called firefighters.

The fire had been extinguished and two trucks stayed on the scene to get rid of the smoke.

A police media spokeswoman said four prisoners were transferred to the Rotorua Police Station for their wellbeing.

A St John media spokeswoman said ambulance were called to the scene but there were no injuries and no one needed to be treated for smoke inhalation.
