The male and female lead for Rotorua Boys' High School's production Footloose.

Rotorua Boys' High School is bringing the 80s back with the energetic, hit production, Footloose.

Joining again with Rotorua Girls' High School, months of rehearsals will come to an end with opening night this Friday.

Based on the popular 1984 movie, it's a story of a small American town where music is forbidden. Until Ren, played by Tawhao Webster, moves there from Chicago and convinces his new friends it's time for a change.

Directed by John Drummond, the students have been under dance and vocal training from top industry professionals - choreographer Turanga Merito and vocal coach Elisha Hulton.

"It's been a great experience and we've been taught by the best," Tawhao said.

"Probably the most enjoyable part has been all the dancing and the friendships we've made."

Rotorua Girls' High School's Teina Cassidy plays the female lead, Ariel, the daughter of a strict reverend.

"It has so much going on, dancing, singing, acting - it's a really physical show." she said.

"There's been a lot of hard work that's gone into this and we have a young cast so it's been a privilege to be able to perform my last high school production with them."

The production is littered with pop anthems such as Holding Out For A Hero, Almost Paradise, Let's Hear It For The Boy, and of course the title track, Footloose with music performed live each night by the band formed of Rotorua Boys' High School students and teachers.

Rotorua Boys' High School principal Chris Grinter said it has been exciting to see the cast and crew of Footloose grow and develop since auditions were held late last year.

"With opening night this Friday, all this hard work and countless hours of rehearsals comes to fruition."
