Extra car parking added for influx of people at Rotorua vigil

Extra parking has been made available to help cater for the hundreds of people expected to attend a special one-hour vigil to reflect on the horrific Christchurch terror attacks.

Organisers are expecting a high turn out to the memorial at Rotorua's Lakefront today for the community to come together in support of the local Muslim community.

The Rotorua Lakes Council has opened up an area of the Lakefront reserve to use as parking to help accommodate for an influx of people expected to attend.

The carpark will be one-way in and out for those attending the vigil and will be open between 1pm and 4pm.

The venue has also changed to the Lakefront from its original location at Te Manawa to provide more space.

The event has been organised by the Rotorua Muslim Community in association with the Rotorua Multicultural Council and Rotorua Lakes Council.

It will start at 2.30pm.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Bring a chair or blanket as seating is very limited
- A condolence book will be available to sign, but feel free to bring your own signs or messages of support
- Collection buckets will also be available and this will go to the Givealittle page
- Be mindful of your surroundings and please take rubbish with you when you leave
