Our publishing of news stories does not necessarily mean we condone the attitudes and actions of those featured in the stories - some (a very small segment of) readers don't realise this.
There are a lot of attitudes and actions we do not condone, but this does not mean we won't bring you the story.
In a similar way, you might say the Rotorua Public Library should receive no grief over its decision to stock the controversial book about the deaths of the Kahui twins. Huge pressure has been put on retailers not to sell the book.
You might not agree with the concept or the origin of the book, but you don't have to read it. The book has had a lot of free publicity - thanks mainly to those campaigning against its sale - and there will be many interested in reading it.
Two points: 1) Shouldn't they be allowed to read it if they want to? 2) Just because they read it doesn't mean they buy in to what is being said.
It's worth noting that our library stocks Mein Kampf (My Struggle) by Adolf Hitler, and no one's accusing them of condoning genocide.
