TGIF is an acronym that clogs up newsfeeds at the end of each working week - and today is one to be even more thankful for.

Why? Because it marks, for many, the start of an even longer weekend. It's Labour Weekend, which means we can have a break from working. We can spend it socialising with friends, catching up with family, doing jobs around the house we've been putting off or just relaxing.

However you plan to spend your long weekend - if you're one of the people lucky enough to get one - we hope you enjoy it.

And there is plenty to do in Rotorua. As we have highlighted in today's paper, there are a lot of activities on here this weekend.

According to the MetService long-range forecast, this long weekend in Rotorua is looking to be a bit cloudy and wet.

If you don't mind some showers, you can check out the races at the 2012 Rotorua Plate Day, see the action at the annual Maori rugby league tournament, look at what's on offer at the Gypsy Fair or take part in the Spookers Zombie Walk. But if you prefer to stay indoors when wet weather hits, you can spend it at the BBNZ Open National Championship Basketball Tournament, or head to the movies or go rock climbing at The Wall and more.

However, despite it being a long weekend for many, not everyone gets the weekend off. So when you're out shopping, eating out, heading to the city's tourist activities or just grabbing a coffee, remember there are still plenty of people working - including those serving you.

If you're travelling away this weekend, make sure you're safe on the roads.

If you're sticking around Rotorua, enjoy our natural wonders and the activities we have here.

Be safe and have fun.
