Eat Streat.

Eat Streat.

I can't wait to see what the new and improved Eat Streat is going to look like and judging by talk around town I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

After months of development, the new-look space re-opens for business on Friday afternoon, with the lighting, central boardwalk and alfresco dining areas all expected to be finished by then. According to the council, there will be just "a few relatively minor build elements" left to do in the New Year, following which an official opening will be held.

As with anything new or different everyone has an opinion - from the business owners most affected to those who regularly enjoy a meal or an after-work drink at one of Eat Streat's bars or restaurants.

As the centre structure has taken shape, people either seem to be loving it or hating it. It's impossible to sit down there at the moment and not be drawn into a conversation about what's going on, whether we like it and debate rumours of what may happen next.

What everyone does agree on is that it will be great to have it finished. It will be nice to stroll from one side of the street to the other rather than peering through the wire fencing wondering what those on the "other side" are up to. With the sunny days we've had lately, I can think of nothing better than a vibrant, buzzing, united Eat Streat, hopefully playing host to live music and other summer events.

I'm hopeful it's going to be a great asset for Rotorua and silence all the doubters. Eat Streat businesses have undoubtedly been affected by the ongoing construction, some more than others, so for them in particular I hope the disruption proves a small price to pay.

Call me a fence-sitter but I'm reserving my judgment until I see the final, construction zone-free street on Friday ... I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to like it.
