Winter is on its way so an ice-skating rink makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

Rotorua is normally known for the hot stuff that bubbles out of the ground but the people who make things happen in this city have come up with something a lot cooler - an ice skating rink.

And once we have the rink, well we might as well have some sort of winter festival to go with it.

Places like Taupo pride themselves in hosting events virtually every week of the year and Rotorua certainly hosts its fair share of events, large and small. But there are times when nothing much is happening and people may be unaware of the work that goes on behind the scenes to try to ensure that those quiet times are filled with something new.

New ideas are always welcome and it's good to be able to offer locals and visitors something a little different, something extra to do during the quieter times of year, something we don't normally get to do locally.

As we report today, an ice skating rink is to be set up at Rotorua's Lakefront Village Green for about a month this winter and it's hoped a winter festival can be created around that.

It's a good idea and should prove a popular - and fun - addition to activities in the city.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
