Some people are never happy and when it comes to major events that impact on locals' movements, there will always be some upset they can't go where they please, when they please.
By and large the iconic Rotorua marathon has run without any major incidents, the majority of locals accepting it happens once every year and may mean a slower trip across town, having to take a different route or waiting somewhere for runners and walkers to cross or go by. It's expected and we can plan for it.
The 48th running of the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon on Saturday was marred by an incident involving the main race frontrunners and a motorist who, it appears, was not a supporter of the event. As we report today, nobody was hurt and the race continued.
There were also issues with young marshalls stationed at the entrance to Rotorua's soccer park where the code was holding its junior season opening day and where comings and goings were slowed by participants in shorter distance events run as part of marathon day.
Perhaps holding the season opening day the same day as the marathon wasn't the best idea but maybe the soccer organisers had no choice. And undoubtedly those marshalling at that spot should have been older and experienced at dealing with traffic. Be that as it may, sometimes these situations occur and common sense and courtesy should prevail on both sides so that everyone can enjoy their day.
