The importance of leadership can perhaps best be demonstrated by imagining what things would be like if there were none.
Who would make decisions, foster discussion, set direction, take responsibility, lead by example, manage performance, nurture talent and encourage development?
But that's not all a leader does. There are many types of leadership and leaders, and perhaps a maritime metaphor is appropriate: We immediately think of a captain leading from the front, but imagine a boat without a rudder. A rudder does not lead from the front, but is essential to the direction of the vessel.
With the Rotorua Community Leadership Awards, given with a nod to the spirit of Sir Peter Blake, we aim to recognise leadership in its various forms, and leaders from all walks of life, who are setting an example we can all be proud of.
The awards are in seven categories: sport, youth, iwi, business, community service, the arts and the environment, with two awards made in each.
