News the Rotorua District Council will scrap part of its controversial development contribution scheme will be welcome to those who've long said it stifles the city's growth.
Rotorua is a prime spot for large businesses to base themselves and the added incentive of moving to or establishing in a city that doesn't ask for such a big lump sum up front could be the kickstart this town needs to move ahead.
It's good news for those building homes too. The council says anyone building a typical new residential dwelling could expect to pay an average of around 46 per cent, or nearly $8000 less.
Scrapping the current system could be seen as a brave move. The council estimates it will cost a quarter of a million dollars in lost revenue over the rest of the current year. But if it encourages new business and stimulates the economy as hoped, that amount should be more than compensated.
