Workers in Rotorua have felt an earthquake which struck off the East Coast.
GeoNet reported the quake struck 155km east of Te Araroa north of Gisborne at 11.33am today.
The 6.5 magnitude quake had a focal depth of 31km and the intensity was classified as severe.
A Te Waiariki Purea Trust staff member earlier told the Rotorua Daily Post their Pukuatua St building was being evacuated.
Another staff member said about seven staff working on the top level of the building had exited to the ground level as a safety precaution.
