There's set to be more El Salvadorian cuisine dished up on tables around the city, after a successful cooking class wowed participants.
The class was the latest in the U&I Can Cook series run by Multicultural Rotorua where El Salvadorian Blanca Alvarez taught people how to make traditional dishes from her home country.
Ms Alvarez said she was nervous about the classes but was "so pleased" with the result. "Everyone was happy, I think they really did like it."
Ms Alvarez said New Zealanders generally didn't know much about the cuisine of her home country but they seemed to like what they saw. "I got some feedback from them that they were amazed how many things I could prepare with one ingredient [dried kidney beans].
Participants learnt to cook frijoles borrachos (drunk beans), casamientos (fried rice with red bean soup), rancheros and masa tortillas. The most popular dish was the 'drunk beans' which was primarily made up of kidney beans, she said.
