It was sailing success for those who turned out to Rotorua Yacht Club's Sailing Try It Out Day - despite the weather.

The event was held on Saturday and aimed to give locals the chance to sail a variety of vessels, from yachts to sailboards, on Lake Rotorua.

It was open to those 6 years and up, who tried their hands at sailing either by themselves or with an experienced club member.

Rotorua Yacht Club's Sue Davy described the day as a success with dozens turning out to give the sport a go, and many of them choosing to sign up for additional sailing lessons.

"It was really good, despite the bad weather and the wind, it didn't deter people as we had plenty of people come along," she said.

Mrs Davy said many people enjoyed the experience and had now signed up to twice-weekly lessons, until Easter.

They will work towards gaining a certificate in sailing from Yachting New Zealand.

Mrs Davy said what made sailing so unique was that it was something the whole family could enjoy.

Her son Ben, 13, was testament to that, she said.

"It's something we can all do together and he [Ben] just absolutely loves it, rain or sunshine, he always wants to go out sailing on the lake."

Mrs Davy said it was also an opportunity to unwind and appreciate what's around you. She said it was likely the event would be held annually and she hoped yearly events would keep sparking people's interest in sailing and encourage more people to join the club.
