About $7000 worth of cannabis has been found in a bag by someone walking their dog in a park, sparking a police investigation.
The cannabis was found wrapped in a plastic bag by someone walking in Taupo's Whakaipo Scenic Reserve.
They called the police, who discovered the bag contained a substantial amount of cannabis and found a second bag, also containing cannabis, nearby.
Detective Allan Humphries of the Taupo Police said the cannabis had an estimated street value of $7000 and was a "large amount".
Cannabis plants and leaves were in the bags which were large enough to fill a 20-litre bucket.
Mr Humphries said he did not believe the cannabis was being grown on the reserve. "People like to hide cannabis on other people's property so if it is found it's not found on their property," he said.
Sergeant James McGrogan said Acacia Bay was a popular place so he was hopeful someone in the area may have noticed something suspicious.
He wants to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity, people or vehicles in the area over the past two weeks.
