Ish Sodhi's loss looks set to be the Northern Knights' gain.

The country's leading leg spinner's exclusion from the Black Caps test side to play Sri Lanka today means he is available to form a potential three-pronged spin attack alongside Jono Boult and Mitchell Santner against the Otago Volts in Alexandra and Central Stags and New Plymouth.

With the test match side yet to be confirmed there remains a chance Dean Brownlie will be released from the national squad and will also be available.

The flip side of that coin would fall in the Volts' favour, with either Hamish Rutherford or Jimmy Neesham providing possible reinforcements based on selection.

The Knights also welcome back Jono Hickey, who made a brief appearance in the recent Twenty20 campaign but has been a proven commodity in one-day cricket in recent seasons.

The side will be looking to go one better this season after falling at the final hurdle at home at Bay Oval against the Wellington Firebirds.

The team's first home matches of the campaign are at Mount Maunganui on New Year's Day against the Firebirds.
