The Rotorua District Council is asking residents to stay away from streams, rivers and watercourses due to the risk of contamination.

The Rotorua District Council is on standby and monitoring weather conditions overnight tonight.

The council is warning residents to stay away from water courses for next few days.

Weather conditions improved in Rotorua this afternoon allowing flood waters to recede.

However, the council is advising residents to stay away from drains, streams and other water courses for the next two or three days as a precaution due to the risk of water being contaminated as a result of the flooding.

As more rain is expected this evening and into the night the council will continue to monitor conditions overnight and remains on standby and ready to reactivate its Emergency Operations Centre if required.
