The cause of death of a Rotorua baby can not be determined but sends a warning to parents not to co-sleep with their infants, according to a coroner.
An inquest was held in Rotorua this morning into the death of a 27-day-old boy who died at a Rotorua address in April this year. A post mortem found low levels of methamphetamine in his blood but not his liver and it was ruled this did not contribute significantly to his death.
Rotorua coroner Wallace Bain suppressed the name of the baby and his parents for the "decency and privacy" of the family, who had since turned their lives around.
Detective Mihikore Owen gave evidence that on April 26 the infant was fed and placed on the far side of a queen size bed, dressed in a onesie outfit.
He had a blanket wrapped around him with his arms free and was put down on his left side to sleep.
