Chinese tourist hit by car in Rotorua transferred to Waikato Hospital

A Chinese tourist remains in a critical condition after being hit by a car on Fenton St.

A police media spokeswoman said the woman's condition had not changed and she was now in Waikato Hospital.

The incident happened near Countdown about 6.30pm on Monday.

Manager of Ascot on Fenton, Frank Lau, said he heard a boom and lots of screaming.

"There were lots of people trying to help her and people called an ambulance and the police...it's very sad, I still feel sad."

An employee at Liquor King on Fenton St, Rachelle Ma, said she had been working at the time of the incident, and tried to help.

"I heard screaming. It's not a good place to cross, there's bad lighting."

She said a woman who worked at Te Puia gave first aid to the woman before ambulances and police arrived.

Denise Emery, human resources and health and safety manager at Te Puia, had spoken to the staff member who came to the woman's aid.

"They respectfully decline to comment, as they do not wish to be involved at this time."

Senior Sergeant Mike Membery told the Rotorua Daily Post on Monday evening the woman was a tourist from China.

A police media spokeswoman said the Serious Crash Unit was investigating the incident and that was likely to take some time.
