Rotorua's Matt Browning has spent many painstaking hours making websites for other people, but never thought his own idea would steal the spotlight.

The web-designer's new website www.10below.co.nz acts as a third-party for companies selling gifts for $10 or less, and has already logged thousands of views since it went live on Friday last week.

Mr Browning does not deal with stock or order numbers, you just click on the item you like and you are re-directed to another website belonging to the seller where you can purchase the item or see their other stock, he said. He was not sure why the site was so popular but said people had commented it had made their lives a lot easier around Christmas time.

"One mother commented to me that she had done her entire Christmas shopping through the site, which had saved her a lot of time," he said. Mr Browning was surprised the site had gained so much traffic as he did little marketing.

"It's all been social media. I put it up once on Facebook and it initially got 400 views, and then in the following days it got 1200 views, and just multiplied from there."

Mr Browning said he tried to find as many local crafts-people for unique and interesting gift ideas, and as a plug for local business. "A lot of people have commented that they like the gifts on the site because they are not rubbish," he said. "It started off with five companies with good gifts, and it kind of grew. I have got a few friends who make things and there are a lot of local and New Zealand-wide crafts on there."
