Rotorua's Jason McMillan is one of the giving souls helping keep animals alive at the SPCA.
When a friend found an injured cat on the side of the road after what looked like a hit and run, Mr McMillan took the 4-month-old tomcat to the SPCA.
"It was not ina good way, so we tried to patch him up with what we had around the house and then I took him into the vet." Veterinarians said the cat's leg was so damaged it would have to be removed, but they were not able to find the animal's owner to pay for the surgery.
The cat's options at that point were limited, Mr McMillan said.
"They put it [the cat] down if they can't find a sponsor for it, so I decided to sponsor it through my business Aerial Solutions BOP."
The cat, which Mr McMillan has affectionately named Ranga, had its leg amputated last week, and will now undergo therapy to learn to walk on three legs.
Mr McMillan will then wait for the call saying he can take Ranga home.
"I have a large fluffy cat called Gary, so he might take a bit of getting used to," he said.
Vet Plus sponsors and does all of Rotorua SPCA's surgeries, veterinarian Trevor Kelly said.
"We have a really close working relationship with SPCA. It fulfils our being a good corporate citizen by supporting an organisation within our industry."
