The Rotorua SPCA is struggling to deal with the city's stray cat problem, with 804 cats caught by or dropped off at the local branch in the past five months.
Rotorua SPCA manager Nicola Martin said the centre was at capacity and there was just no more room.
"The problem is hard for us to deal with. Last year we needed to put down 1242 unwanted cats," she said.
Ms Martin said the problem stemmed from people not being able to afford to get their cats de-sexed.
"It's a money issue. It always boils down to a money problem but when you have an animal, you have a responsibility," she said.
