Safety-approved car seats are being credited in saving the life of three children who were involved in a two-car crash near Hamurana.
Emergency services were called about 11am on Sunday the intersection of State Highway 5 and Oturoa Rd. A woman and two children under 7 suffered serious injuries, including broken femurs and damage to the liver. They were taken to Rotorua Hospital by ambulance.
Sergeant Chris McLeod, of the Rotorua police, said a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old woman, was heading north when it crossed the centre line. The driver, who was alone, received minor injuries.
"It crashed head-on with another vehicle which had five members inside, three children and two adults," he said. The children ranged in age from 12 months to 7 years of age.
"The baby was in an approved safety capsule and the children all were in correct car seats - there's no doubt that these saved their lives," Mr McLeod said.
