Hunters are reporting successful Canada goose hunting as the main game bird season comes to an end.
The 2010 game bird season in the eastern fish and game region has now finished for all species except Canada geese, which can be hunted 24 hours a day with no limit until September 19.
Fish and Game has had reports of groups of hunters successfully targeting specific populations of Canada geese, with more than 70 shot in one hunt in some cases.
"The annual game bird hunter survey - that has been running since 1992 - shows that this season so far has been the best Canada goose season since the survey started," Fish and Game Officer Matthew McDougall said.
Fish and Game is encouraging hunters to make the most of the remaining season to reduce local goose populations.
"As you might expect some geese are quite wary at this time of the season. However, naive yearling birds are also leaving the older birds around this time, so if hunters get out there with callers, decoys, and make sure they are well camouflaged, then they can expect some exciting hunting," Mr McDougall said.
Fish and Game is happy to help any landowners having problems with geese. Landowners can call Fish and Game on 0800 434 742 if they have Canada geese on their properties and want hunters to deal to them, Mr McDougall said.
