Hundreds of Rotorua kids have learned the story behind the military truck that delivered food to the Maori Battalion during World War II thanks to local personality Aunty Bea Yates' latest book.
Aunty Bea launched Te Rau Aroha - The Kai Truck at Tamatekapua. The 32-page book is bilingual and was accompanied by a CD in English and te reo. The launch was supported by the Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust.
The book had been in the pipeline for two years and Aunty Bea said it would not have been possible without a writers' grant from Ngati Whakaue.
"Undoubtedly a wonderful experience to hear and know the war experiences of Te Rau Aroha in World War II," said Maurice Walden, who attended the event.
