Big donation lifts Christmas appeal

An anonymous donor has given $1000 cash for the Salvation Army foodbank in the Rotorua Daily Post Christmas Appeal.

The man, who did not want to be identified, said there was a need in Rotorua to support people who struggle at this time of year.

"We are in a position to give ... there are a lot of people who are in a worse position than we are."

The man said he had donated to charity before, including the Salvation Army, but never as much as the recent donation.

"We support the Salvation Army each year in various ways ... it has a problem providing people from the foodbank which is often under pressure around this time of year."

Three banks in Rotorua - ANZ, BNZ and Westpac - have joined the list to become involved in collecting donations of non-perishable food items at branches.

Staff at Scion, Lakes District Health Board, Farmers and The Warehouse have also come on board to help contribute.

A can drive on December 9 has gained support from the Rotorua Fire Service, Lake Okareka Volunteer Fire Brigade and Ritchies Transport.

There have also been large contributions from Plastic Systems and Orca Marine staff, who brought in four bags of donated food.

Rotorua resident Margaret Wilson handed over 54 items to the Salvation Army last week.

Donations to The Rotorua Daily Post Christmas Appeal can be made at our Hinemoa St office between 8am and 5pm weekdays.
