Behind the News: An occasional blog going behind the scenes of The Daily Post
The past week has seen a strange mix of triumph and tragedy dominate the local news.
From the emotional welcoming of the Samoan Rugby World Cup contingent and Rotorua's successful hosting of our first big Cupmatch to the reopening of the Central Mall, there has been no shortage of uplifting and positive stories to bring you.
But there have been moments of tragedy as well: the deaths of Dion Church, Norm Hepburn, a 2-year-old boy run over by a tractor and a young woman killed in crash near Turangi, and the discovery of two fishermen's bodies at Lake Arapuni.
We'd love to bring you only positive news every day (in fact we're often criticised for not doing that) because if we were to do that it would mean nothing bad was happening in our city or region.
But the world's not like that. Bad things happen to good people and we have a duty to you, our readers, to tell you what's going on - be it good or bad.
Some critics would have us play down crime stories, believing it paints a negative picture of the community, but these critics ignore the countless positive stories we run which we believe portray the great things about our community.
We think the majority of our readers want the full picture of what's going on around them, and we're committed to bringing you that full picture.
