Back-to-back frosts in Rotorua difficult for drivers

Gritting has been carried out on roads in the region after more ice-related crashes this morning.

Rotorua Lakes Council's Infrastructure general manager Stavros Michael said contractors were out early this morning carrying out their routine inspections of about a dozen rural roads.

"Gritting was carried out today on Spencer, Tarawera and Waikite Valley Rds. Contractors will continue to monitor roading conditions as the cold weather is forecast for the next few days."

Michael said motorists should take extreme care on all roads and remind them to allow for extra time so they get to their destination safely.

Police also warned motorists to take care this morning after a series of ice-related crashes yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said a car went into a ditch this morning on State Highway 36 near the intersection with Stewart Rd about 10.20am. Two people were in the car but neither were injured.

Police were also called to a single vehicle crash on State Highway 30 in Tikitere at 6.55am.

The crash happened near Lake Rotokawau Rd where the road was reported to be quite icy, she said.

There were no injuries and no road blockages.

Earlier another single vehicle crash happened on State Highway 30 near Tamatea St about 6.40am. Police said this was caused by ice and there were no injuries and no road blockages.

There was a request to send a grit truck to the area.

At 7.10am a vehicle hit the side of the road about 2km north of Link Rd on State Highway 1 in Wairakei. There were no injuries or road blockages.
