The death of a 3-month-old Taupo girl has been referred to the coroner after the results of a post mortem examination revealed the death was not suspicious.
The infant failed to wake mid Wednesday morning and her parents rushed her to Taupo Hospital.
Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Pearce of the Taupo police said there were rumours around Taupo about the baby's death which were "untrue, unhelpful and harmful". He said the police were involved because the baby died suddenly, which was the case with all unexplained deaths.
"Unfortunately this situation is not unusual and police are regularly involved with such cases to provide detailed information to the coroner around the events leading up to a death."
Mr Pearce said although it was up to the coroner to release the findings on the cause of death, the police investigation and initial post mortem results indicated there were no suspicious circumstances.
