A man has been arrested in relation to the Work and Income building in Rotorua going into lockdown.

The building on Pukuatua St went into lockdown "in response to a threat received", police said in a statement earlier today.

Police confirmed a 29-year-old local man had been taken into custody facing a charge of using threatening language and was due to appear in the Rotorua District Court tomorrow.

Police understood the building had resumed normal operations.

Earlier a sign on the front entrance of the building said: "We're sorry we've had to close unexpectedly."

A police car could be seen parked outside the building.
